I'm Not that Naieve
This Internship was harder to go through than he thought it would be.
Kenny sat in the Cafeteria, a stryofoam cup in his right hand, a dark, bitter fluid contained inside. Coffee of course. His free hand was flipping through pages on his clipboard. Incisions, diagnostics, heart rhythms. All studies for him to finally ceome a surgical doctor were here.
And Kenny didn't like studying, he didn't like the fact that he had to watch while the real doctors got to work on all the patients, while he watched. Sure, he'd been told he'd be getting an assignment soon. But the wait was agonizing, and Kenny found himself extremely bored with the Hospital.
He'd have to wait though, until it was his chance to play doctor.
He took a sip from the dark liquid, sighing to himself and forcing a weary smile. He'd been observing surgical procedures for a good time now, so he'd decided to go down the the cafeteria and rest his throbbing mind.
He'd seen alot of diseases, treatments, surgical menuevers. All in these past months. He'd have to say that the most tragic thing he'd seen so far here was a young girl with a fatal disease called Ondine's Curse. She was hooked up to this big mechanical lung at night, in the hospital. Because, her nervous system wouldn't tell her lungs to start breathing unconsciously, she had to think Breathe. Breathe. whil she was awake. Otherwise, she just wouldn't take in any air. She would probably die. It had actually made Kenny weep. The world was so unfair sometimes.
The one thing Kenny was having trouble with, was coping with the fact that he wouldn't be able to save everyone. The doctor he was studying under had told him. There are some people you'll have to tell. That they won't make it to their next birthday. It's just part of the job. You get used to it. That was the problem.
Kenny didn't want to get used to it. He wanted to save everyone who came under his scalpel. He wanted to save people. It hurt him to know he wouldn't be able to. Some people are just too far gone.
Like that little girl.
He bit his lip and took in a deep breath through his nose.
Learn to be a little easier on yourself Kenny.
The only thing that will matter is that you did all you can. He thought softly, feeling a tragic tug on his heart strings.
And Kenny would do all he could, to help someone.
Hopefully that would be enough.
